Spring Has Sprung and the Bacteria Are Blooming

May 10, 2013

Every year, the warmer temperatures of spring signal the start of something new—fresh flowers, green grass, and refreshing rainfall. Not everything comes just once a year though.

When it comes to your smile, the bacteria in your mouth are always blooming (which the ADA talks about here). Two kinds in particular are responsible for a common dental problem like cavities: Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. Fueled by sugar and other carbs, these bacteria multiply, triggering the demineralization of tooth enamel and causing cavities.

Keep Your Smile Healthy with a Regular Home Care Routine

To control these bacteria, and the resulting decay, one of the best things you can do is maintain a regular home care routine.  We recommend brushing twice a day, flossing at least once, and using a trusted antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash.

As effective as this routine can be, though, it can be undermined by not brushing for at least two minutes. Toothbrushes from Sonicare make this easy with a two-minute timer, while some children’s brushes are designed to play a song for two minutes, giving your son or daughter a fun way to brush for the recommended amount of time.

Flossing may not seem that important compared to brushing, but it is. Flossing helps you remove food particles from between teeth. When these particles aren’t removed, they’ll break down over time, leading to an increased risk of gum disease and decay

Regular Visits for Yourself and Your Family

In addition to brushing and flossing at home, regular visits are also important. We recommend seeing Dr. Salzberg-Siegel twice a year for an oral exam and professional cleaning. We can also use products like CariFree and Oxyfresh to provide more comprehensive care. CariFree measures the amount of cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth while Oxyfresh targets the sulphur compounds that cause bad breath.

On top of all this, Dr. Salzberg-Siegel can also advise you on how to set a good example for your child at home. One way is by making it a point to brush together until your child is old enough to brush on his or her own.

Is It Time for Your Family’s Next Checkup?

To schedule a routine visit for yourself or your child, call our Clinton Township dental office. During your visit Dr. Salzberg-Siegel can talk to you about your home care routine and can recommend changes or improvements if need be. Our office serves patients from communities all around Clinton Township.

Let’s Keep Our New Year’s Resolutions to Get Healthy!

April 3, 2013

For many of us, we have the best intentions to make lifestyle changes when a new year begins. As the days, weeks and months pass by it is easy to break this promise we make to ourselves. It is so important to remember the consequences of doing this can be life-changing.
We are here to help you get back on track! One way that you can gain motivation, insight and accountability is by using Smartphone apps. Your plan is then always with you giving alerts and tips throughout your busy day. Here are some suggestions from Dr. Oz and his colleagues as to some of the best apps to try: http://www.doctoroz.com/videos/health-apps-work-pt-1

Healthy eating, daily workouts, and getting an annual physical are all good ways to help your physical and mental well-being. One of the most important areas of your body, your mouth, is often overlooked in this process. Often times this missing link is the key in getting many systemic health issues under control.

As recently reported by the Journal of Dental Research and the CDC, close to half of American adults have some form of gum disease. At the Clinton Township dental office of Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel, we offer several effective forms of periodontal therapy to help you restore your oral health. Scaling and Root Planing, Arestin antibiotic placement and Peridex Medicated Irrigation are only a few of the methods used to help with Periodontal disease.

Not only will this type of oral health check up improve your overall health, but give some insight into causes of bad breath that others may not be telling you about. The Oxyfresh Fresh Breath System is offered by dental professionals to assist in eliminating bad mouth odors by breaking down volatile sulphur compounds in the mouth. This almost tasteless rinse can help fight bad breath and help you feel fresh throughout the entire day. Please call our office to find out how Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel can help 586-416-1444.

Use Your Dental Benefits This Holiday Season Before They Expire

November 26, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — tntadmin @ 4:29 pm

A lot goes into preparing for the holidays. A list of everything you have to do might include buying presents, making travel plans,  preparing the house for visitors, holiday decorating, and a lot more.

One thing that can get left off that list, though, is a dental checkup and tooth cleaning at Dr. Salzberg-Siegel’s Clinton Township dental office. The most obvious reason for including a dental checkup and tooth cleaning appointment in your plans is that they help you support your overall health and wellbeing.

What do we mean by that?

We mean that not only does your oral health benefit, but so does your entire body. That’s something Dr. Salzberg-Siegel wants all of her Michigan patients to enjoy.

A less obvious, but still important reason, for a holiday dental checkup and tooth cleaning is that appointments like those help you use your dental benefits. For most people, the end of the year means that dental benefits will be reset at the start of the next year. That means your annual deductible will be back at square one, just like your annual maximum.

Your annual maximum is what your insurance company will pay for. If you still have any of your annual maximum left, that’s money you’ll lose at the start of 2013. Don’t let that happen. Take advantage of the help your dental benefits can give you by scheduling a visit with Dr. Salzberg-Siegel between now and the end of the year.

At our Clinton Township dental office in Michigan, you’ll find a compassionate, experienced team ready to help you with all aspects of your oral health. More than just your smile will benefit—your overall health and wellbeing will too. To learn more about the connection between your smile and your overall health and wellbeing, take a look at this video:

If you live in Clinton Township, or elsewhere in Michigan, our dental office is ready to help you restore your oral health. Call us today to reserve an appointment. And let us know in the comments section what you’re doing this holiday season to keep your smile clean, healthy, and beautiful.

With Another School Year around the Corner, Have You Scheduled Your Child’s Back-to-School Visit?

August 4, 2012

It seems like August just started, but already parents everywhere are getting their kids ready for a new school year. That means shopping for new clothes, stocking up on pens, paper, and binders, and looking for a sturdy new backpack.

With everything that’s going on, though, what can easily get left out of all this is something that is really quite important: a back-to-school dental visit with Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel.

The reason back-to-school dental visits are so important is that the school year, which for a lot of students runs from August through May, is a hectic time for parents and children. Not only is there homework for kids to keep up with, there are also extracurricular activities like sports, theater, and band. Finding the time for a dental exam in between all that can be difficult, which is why it’s better to do it now than put it off till later.

What happens during a back-to-school dental visit?

First, Dr. Salzberg-Siegel will check for signs of common oral health problems, like cavities or gum disease. These are issues that should be treated sooner rather than later, when treatment will be more conservative and more comfortable.

Our Clinton Township team isn’t just interested in helping young patients treat problems, though. We’re also concerned about prevention. During the second part of your child’s back-to-school visit, we’ll take steps to prevent these common oral health problems through a professional cleaning, in addition to recommending home care tips, and, if we need to, discussing treatment options.

Are you ready to schedule your child’s back-to-school visit with Dr. Salzberg-Siegel? Call our Clinton Township dental office today. We’re proud to have been serving our community with great family dental care for more than 25 years.

The Importance of Freedom

July 13, 2012

We’ve just celebrated another Fourth of July, and from all of us at Dr. Salzberg-Siegel’s office, we hope you had a fun and safe holiday.

What’s more, with the Fourth still fresh on our minds, we’d like to use today’s post to talk a little bit about freedom.

Americans put a high value on freedom. It’s part of what makes our nation so great. Besides having the freedom to explore all the great corners of our country, freedom gives our children the chance to pursue their dreams, and makes it possible for all of us to live according to our beliefs, consciences, and talents.

That’s not all we’re talking about when we talk about freedom, though. You also have the freedom to choose your own dentist instead of having one chosen for you by your insurance. That means you can see the doctor who will give you the best care.

That’s incredibly important!

You want a dentist who is committed to protecting smiles from common problems like cavities.  At Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel’s office in Clinton Township, we do that every day using CareFree’s great products. With CariFree, we can help our patients correct the bacterial imbalance that causes cavities to form, creating healthy smiles in the process.

If you’d like to know more about CariFree, or you’d like to learn more about cavities themselves, we hope you’ll visit the CariFree website. There, you’ll find a wealth of information on the myths associated with cavities and tips on preventing them. All of this is invaluable information.

We’d also like to invite you to give our Clinton Township dental office a call if it’s time for your next visit. During your appointment we can talk to you about your smile, CariFree’s many products, and tips for keeping your smile clean. Call us today. We’ve been serving patients from Clinton Township and beyond for more than 25 years and we look forward to helping you.

Planning On an Overseas Vacation This Summer?

June 14, 2012

Summer is coming, and with it, the summer vacation season. From now until August, families across the country will be taking off for some much-needed R&R after the busy school year. Where will you be going this year? Will your travel takes you to another state, or to a whole new country?

Vayama.com, one of the leading websites dedicated to international travel, has revealed this year’s top international travel destinations. They include:

  • India
  • New Zealand
  • South Africa
  • Peru
  • Brazil
  • China
  • Indonesia
  • London
  • Paris
  • St. Petersburg
  • Europe
  • Buenos Aires

Each of these famous destinations has plenty to enjoy, whether you’re looking for delicious food, relaxing amenities, or just a rich experience with history. What may be more difficult is finding a dentist in case of a dental emergency.

As you may know, America is one of the world leaders in dental care. Whether you’re looking for quality general, cosmetic, or restorative dental care, great dentists can be found everywhere. Great dentists can be found all over the world, for that matter, but finding one in a pinch while you’re on vacation can be a challenge.

If you know you need dental care, or if you haven’t stopped by our Clinton Township office for a visit yet, why not schedule an appointment with Dr. Salzberg-Siegel before your trip begins? You want to enjoy your vacation, not spend it worrying about whether you’ll need to find a dentist.

Call us today if you’re ready to schedule your pre-vacation appointment. And feel free to let us know about your vacation plans in the comments section. We’d love to hear what you’ll be doing!

April Is National Oral Cancer Health Month

April 20, 2012

When was your last visit to the dentist? Please take a moment to watch this video explaining how an oral cancer screening with OralDNA could save your life.

It is important to consider the last time you were tested for oral cancer, and to help us be more mindful of this deadly disease, April is National Oral Cancer Health Month. During the month of April, dentists nationwide are encouraging patients to come in for an oral exam and cancer screening.

There are a wide variety of effective screening tools out there. At Dr. Salzberg-Siegel’s Clinton Township office, we screen patients with OralDNA. What OralDNA lets us do is screen patients for a variety of conditions, including periodontal disease, oral cancer, and even HPV.

Why HPV? Because oral cancer caused by HPV is on the rise. Identifying HPV in patients helps Dr. Salzberg-Siegel identify those who may be at increased risk so that a customized treatment plan can be made. The CDC has estimated that as many as 80% of patients may come into contact with at least one of the 120 different types of HPV, often without knowing about it.

Oral Cancer Facts and Statistics

Every year, oral cancer kills more people nationwide than cervical or skin cancer. What’s more, only half of all patients diagnosed will live more than five years after diagnosis. The most common risk factors are tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, consistent sunlight exposure, habitual cheek or lip biting, or poorly fitting denture. However, 25% of oral cancers involve patients with no risk factors at all. That’s often where HPV factors in.

Signs of oral cancer include:

• A sore that bleeds easily or does not heal.
• A color change of the oral tissues.
• A lump, thickening, rough spot, crust, or small, eroded area.
• Pain, tenderness, or numbness anywhere in the mouth or on the lips.

If you’ve never been screened for oral cancer or HPV, there’s no better time for a screening at Dr. Salzberg-Siegel’s office than National Oral Cancer Health Month. You can learn more about oral cancer from the Mayo Clinic and from OralDNA’s webpage. Also, be sure to Call us today.

From All of Us at Dr. Salzberg-Siegel’s Clinton Township Office, We Hope You Have a Happy Holiday Season!

December 13, 2011

From now until the end of the year, there will be many opportunities to share a smile with those who are most important to you. However, maybe you struggle with having the confidence to bare that big grin. If you do, there is still plenty of time to come see us at our Clinton Township office for a regular cleaning or a smile change, such as teeth whitening or cosmetic bonding, before the holiday parties and get-togethers start ramping up.

Regular cleanings are important because they can help you prevent gum disease and detect early tooth decay, but also because more and more dental studies are finding that a connection exists between oral health and the body’s overall health. Click here to read what the Mayo Clinic has written about the link between oral health and overall health.

Is Your Dental Team Working Hard For You?!

October 11, 2011

News From Sophia:

Greetings friends!

We had such an energizing team meeting this morning and just had to share more about it with you.  At Dr. Mindy Salzberg-Siegel’s office, we are continually focused on how we can better serve our patients and exceed their expectations. The focus of our team gathering today was “Communication, Let’s Bridge the Gap.”

We know not only is it important that we have an open line of communication with our patients regarding their dental goals but also among our team to help patients achieve those goals.

Communication and Team-Building Exercises help us to:

1) Improve patient flow, thus decreasing time patients have to spend in the office

2) Learn more about our personalities and thus work better as a team

3) Generate an efficient and productive learning environment to better serve our patients

3)Implement new sterilization techniques and stay up to date with technological advancements

4) Keep chair side assistants and hygienists ‘on their toes’ and in tune to patients’ needs during procedures

5) Learn new techniques for administrative staff to assist in financial planning and convenient scheduling for patients

“Our greatest reward is that patients continue feeling great about their dental care and truly enjoy the time they spend with us.”  -Dr. Mindy

Do you have any input or suggestions for team building exercises?!  We would love to hear them!  Please post!
